Music Video Analysis

King Krule - Alone, Omen 3

•How is composition used to tell the story? Why is the screen sub-divided up into multiple stories/sections of video?

The composition in the video portrays King Krule as solitary and isolated by using long shots, having the only character in the frame being Archy, and using colour correction to change the temperature of the scenes to very cold. The video is divided into sections to show that there are many people living the same life and going through the same struggles. It reinforces the mantra in the lyrics “you’re not alone”.

•How is the environment (beach surface, distant landscape) used to set the atmosphere? What types of shot are used? Explain the choice of shot types.

The first shot in the forest is a very good juxtaposition as in the start, it looks as if Archy is standing in the middle of a busy city centre or a train station with all of the people nudging past each other and being so compact. This changes when the characters leave the frame which I believe represents depression as your mood can change within a second - feeling fine at one point, and feeling alone the next. From a busy enviroment to a lonely forest is a good metaphor to how people feel when going through the situations he is speaking of.

•Explain how and why conventions such as leading line and rule of thirds are used.

In 'Picture One' there are signs of both leading line and rule of thirds. The shoreline, the city-line and the boat passing across the river are eye catching examples of leading line that grab the audiences attention to the extreme long shot. Rule of thirds is used with the sky, river, and beach at the bottom which lines up the shot very nicely.

•How has editing been used at 2 min 20 sec to emphasize the song lyrics?

At 2 minutes 20 seconds, the camera cuts to multiple different people while the lyrics "you're not alone" fades into the background. This is very effective as King Krule is emphazising that the people are not alone and not to give up hope which is the storyline of the music video and song.

•Why do you think the final scene uses jump cuts?

I think the final scene uses jump cuts instead of fades or wipes to be more aggressive to get his point across. Sometimes people need to be told things bluntly which can come off as aggressive. Its to gain more attention from the audiences and to make sure he gets his message across.

•What are the distinctive visual qualities that stand out in this video? How does it relate to the project theme of surfaces?

There are many times where the scenes have been colour corrected and the temperature of the shot has been changed to create a cold tone to the shot. As the song is a very emotional song about mental health problems, I believe this is an effective emphasiser.

•How may it inform your developing ideas?

When developing my ideas, I will keep temperature tones in mind, depending on the cadance of the music at the time. This will help give across the emotion that I want to give the audience in my work.

•Who is it aimed at? How does it target this audience?

The song is aimed at people who are struggling with personal problems and are in need to relating to somebody. Judging by the style of music as well, I would say this is primarily aimed towards young adults - this can be a very stressful and confusing time in peoples lifes so that seems appropriate.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Otherside

•How is composition used to tell the story? What types of shot are used? Explain the choice of shot types.

The fact the shots include Film Noir is very effective as the song is about addiction and coming back from a dark time. So using dark colours and tones is a very useful way of portraying this message. A lot of the scenes look to have been created during the post production stages of the project however the shot types still include medium to long range shots. This is to emphasise the backdrops and the story the surroundings tell.

•What are the distinctive visual qualities that stand out in this video? How could it relate to the project theme of surfaces?

Using Film Noir - black, white and red - is an example of surfaces and film conventions that is very effective in this scenario. The crazy and weird landscapes in the video can also be portrayed as the effects of drugs or being under influence of substance. In the video, there are many fight scenes - I portray this as the character fighting the demons of his addiction and fighting for his life back.

•How may it inform your developing ideas?

I will listen to the lyrics of my chosen song and brainstorm ideas of how I can portray a story or useful message within the music video - keeping colours and symbols/metaphors in mind.

•What processes have been used in making it, and how?

To make the video, they used green screens and green-screen suits to create a moving shadow and to create the backdrops in the video. To create the sky, they painted on a large canvas and used that as a backdrop in the scenes where it was needed.

•Who is it aimed at? How does it target this audience?

This video is aimed at people who have struggled with addiction or mental health problems and are trying to fight for their lives back. A music video like this can be very relateable for these strugglers, therefore the  appeal for it.

Producer

What does the job involve?

Being a producer involves controlling the financial, practical and creative heart of a film or TV drama. They are very hands on and are normally the first people to point out and suggest problems or improvements to allow for the most amount of creativity possible.

What technical skills/software do you need for the role?

The producer does not need to know the ins and outs of all the softwares that are used to make a film but they must at least have an understanding. Having this will allow them to suggest ideas to the other members of the crew that can make the producers vision a reality. Without an understanding of the programs, the producer may suggest something that the editors are unable to create or is out of budget.

For this role, you need to be very organised as well as have good leadership. It is important that they are on top of the whole project, by preparing schedules and creating a production budget using financial skills.

An aspiring film producer should consider getting a bachelor's or master's degree in business, arts management, or nonprofit-organization management, however, going to film school is another viable option.

What technical skills/software do you need for the role?

These editors need to know how to effectively apply the visual effects and CGI into the scenes using softwares like After Effects, Premiere Pro and programs like Cinema 4D.

What aesthetic knowledge do you need? What organisational, management and communication skills do you need for the role?

Communication and organisation is important in this role and the editors work in teams and along-side different types of editors so communication is important to ensure everybody is on the same page. Organisation is important so that multiple editors are not working on the same thing or the directors are getting the wrong shots.

Audience Research

To get a rough idea of the type of audience I am trying to target with my FMP, I have created a questionaire that I hope to help me identify these types of people. From this questonaire, I can tell that the most active age in the media is 16-17 year old males who are either students or working part-time. The multiple choice section has really helped me work out what type of stylisations are to be used in my video. Shot types, and editing styles are easier to plan out now. The questions have given me a rough idea of the locations that I want to use, and what I can do to intrege the audience in clicking onto the video.

The 5 reasons that audiences choose to consume different types of media are:

1. Information/education: acquire knowledge, ie watching The News.

2. Entertainment: enjoyment of the media product, ie watching Eastenders.

3. Personal Identity: empathise with the character’s experience, ie media telling stories about young people in similar circumstances to your own.

4. Integration and social interaction: the ability of media product to generate social interaction, ie chatting with your friends about TV programmes.

5. Escapism: the media product lets you get lost in a fantasy situation, ie playing Zelda!.

Profile 1

The first and most obvious audience is a 16-17 year old student. This person will enjoy Hip-Hop and melodic songs with meaning and emotion, possibly to relate to their own problems in their life.

Profile 2

Another type of person that my FMP is aimed at is a young adult, 18-21 who enjoys melodic music and is interested in the conventions and stylisations of the music video. This person will show more interest in to the video rather than the music which will push me to knowing the importance of the video.
