Sound & Foley

For this project, we were assigned to download an existing animation, mute the sound, and create our own sound effects to the animation. I decided that I wanted to create the sound a foley for "The Man Who Was Afraid Of Falling". I spoke to the person sat next to me, Ieuan, and he wanted to do the same. So we worked together to record the sound and we helped each other edit and use the new software. We created a list of sounds we wanted to create, and how we plan on doing that - and then we went out around the college to record them.

FINAL EDIT

What equipment did you use?

Roland R05 audio recorder with a RODE Shotgun Microphone.

Describe problems you had in recording in different locations.

Background noise, people talking while walking past, low battery on the recorders,

How did you edit the sound effects?

Using parametric equalisers, graphic equalisers, and phasers

What techniques did you explore in Audition? How can this be improved?

In audition I learnt how to cut, split, and trim clips easily. Adding effects was simple, however it is difficult to keep things organised when you have a lot of different tracks. It isn’t easy keeping track of what sounds are what.

Explain how you imported the foley effects into the animation. Describe any problems.

I simply drag and dropped the audio files into audition and started editing.

How were you influenced by research into foley artists?

I took inspiration of sounds from different foley artists. For example, my sound of the plant pot breaking – created by dropping pebbles – was inspired by an idea that I read on a forum of other foley artists.

How did you use audience feedback to help guide your project?

My Audience research informed me of what sounds were most effective, and what to do when I came to re-recording and editing my final edit.
