Week 5

For week 5 of the progression tasks, we have been asked to analyse a comedic product of our choice. I have chosen the popular animation 'Rick & Morty'.

Why have you chosen this product?

I have chosen Rick and Morty because the humour is very dark. The controversial comedy and jokes used throughout the series makes it memorable and very enjoyable to people arent unagitated by this humour. I also enjoy the art style and general look of this series which is another reason why I picked it.

What makes it fun and engaging? What is humorous about it?

The humour is dark involving disasters such as the September 11 attacks, Pearl harbour bombings and other historic moments like these. Here is a clip from their newest series showing this type of humour:

Who is it aimed at? When and how is it broadcast? Does it have age-restrictions?

This series is definetly aimed towards teenagers and young adults. I understand that an older audience who lived through these events and saw the outcome in real life might not see kindly to these jokes, but if you can look past the reality of the situation, this episode can be quite amusing.

How successful has it been? Why?

I believe this series has been to successful because of the immaturity and the dark humour. With fart jokes becoming a running theme throughout the series, it does appeal to teenagers and people aged 15-25. The voice acting and method acting also contributes to the successfulness as the main character is a drunk. The voice actor for this animation often gets drunk himself and improvises a lot of the shows material to keep it authentic and real instead of following a script very closely.

How does it use narrative and character?

The narrative of the series is different for each episode. The episodes relate to each other often and is on a timelime, however the adventure and storyline for each episode is different. Doing this keeps the series new and exciting and allows the animators and artists to create more sci-fi scenes and characters.

The characters in the series always consists of the Smith family (Morty, Jerry, Beth, and Summer). However the main character is their Grandfather, Rick. Rick is a very mysterious scientist and we dont know much about his past. Rick claims to be the smartest in the multi-verse which makes sense as he can travel through parralel universes. The community like to create theories on his background but nothing is confirmed by the developers. Morty is a 14 year old teenager who goes on adventures with his Grandpa. With Morty being so young, it creates a relative point of view and allows the young audience to imagine life in his shoes.

Is it more enjoyable to watch it as a group

This series can be enjoyed watching in a group as you can evolve on the jokes made, however it still is very enjoyable to watch by yourself. Rick often 'breaks the fourth wall' and speaks directly to the viewer - this helps when watching alone as it create a more engaging atmosphere.
