Week 8

For the final week of the progression tasks, we have been asked to analyse how media represented the Black Lives Matters movement.

How have different news organisations represented the events?

News sources have reported the continuous protests not only in the US but also the UK. Newspapers that I have seen spread positivity about the gatherings and the coming together to stop and prevent future mistreatment, starting with race. However, I have also seen news articles only highlighting the negative, being the looting and vandilism in the US. Although I believe the looting needs to be addressed and not hidden from the public, I think the main focus should be of the positive, peaceful protests that are working to encourage young people to get involved and join the movement. I am yet to see a news source report about past criminal cases or police brutality cases that have been overthrone. I think by doing this, it will show the protesters that what they are doing is working and it will motivate them to continue to work for this cause. Change need to be seen, and the mainstream media need to report on that.

How has Netflix responded?

Netflix has created a brand new category to search from on their platform. When searching BLM or a related tag, it will redirect you to this category. This constists of films and series that have a main topic of racist police brutality, racism as a whole, and wrongful killing. Titles like "When They See Us" and "Teach Us All" are showcased. I am unsure if this category was shown on the front page of the website, however I have no doubt that it was at some point. This is a really good outlet to further push the message that Black Lives Matter. Netflix has a very large teenage audience and by recommending these types of films can educate the young and clueless about the existing problems that we face in the modern world with racism.

What responsibility does the media have in how the issue is represented?

The media has a HUGE responsibility to peoples opinions. Especially young adults and teenagers. These people get most, if not, all of their information from the internet these days, so the headlines and portrayal of good and bad is major and key. For example, if a morally wrong instagram page kept getting recommended to a teenager as they grows up, they will believe that everything they have read is true and right because it is all they know. At a young age, people believe whatever they read. This is why it is of such importance that news outlets behave morally correct and allow the public to see the good from the bad. In my opinion, the bad should not be hidden, rather highlighted and emphasised that it is wrong. For the longest time, police and authority have hidden cases of police brutality and for some members of the public, they were clueless that it was even happening. This is why it is so important that people, espescially the new generation, take social media into their advantage to fix and bring awareness to the wrong and corrupt.
