What technical skills does an editor need?

Editors will need a range of technical skills. To be able to use softwares like Adobe Premiere Pro, and After Effects is essential in this role as these are the industry leading softwares for editing. To be able to create transitions and effects to compliment the camerawork and scene is very important.

What other general skills does an editor need?

An important skill that an editor should have is a creative mind. To be able to turn a thought and a picture in your head into reality is a very difficult but important skill to become an effective editor.

​

Who would an editor communicate with?

An editor will comminicate with the producer, VFX producers and animator so that they can start to plan out the most effective way to go about editing the scene. Editors will communicate with these roles to get a head start in their planning phase.

​

What qualifications might you need to become an editor?

You don't need a foundation degree, HND or degree to be a film or video editor, but it's important that you show commitment and determination to get into the industry.

​

You need to be able to demonstrate that you have the necessary skills, and so a degree or HND that offers film or media production experience may be helpful. The following subjects are relevant:

  • communication and media studies

  • fine art or visual art

  • graphic design

  • information technology/multimedia

  • photography, film or television.

What technical skills does a production designer need?

Production designers need to be able to create a scene that fits the senario in the script. They do this buy communicating with the other departments and building a set that will fit best.

What other general skills does a production designer need?

Production designers need to be very creative, be quite artistic, have knowledge of photography, and be very organised.

Who would a production designer communicate with?

Production designers start with the script. Researching and collaborating with the director, director of photograpy and other heads of department.

What qualifications might you need to become a production designer?

Relevant degree and HND subjects include those related to art and design. The following subjects in particular are most likely to provide relevant skills and knowledge:

  • architecture

  • creative, performing or technical arts

  • drama or theatre studies

  • fine art or visual art

  • graphic design or illustration

  • interior design

  • landscape architecture and design

  • theatre or performance design

  • 3D design.
